I graduated from De Montfort University in 2005 with 1st Class Honours in Primary Education (BEd) with a specialism in Maths. I started my teaching career in Key Stage 2 but have been a Year 1 teacher for the past 9 years. During this time, I have also been leading Maths across my school.
From early in my teaching career I have been passionate about teaching and learning in Mathematics. In 2013, I was part of the first cohort to achieve Mathematics Specialist Teacher (MaST) accreditation from the University of Northampton.
This, alongside my current involvement in the Teaching for Mastery project, have provided me with up to date subject knowledge regarding the pedagogy of teaching maths where all children can do maths and succeed. I love ‘crafting’ maths lessons and sequences of learning so that young children develop a deep understanding about early mathematical concepts as well as enjoyment of the subject too.
Much of my experience lies in the teaching and learning of Maths in Early Years and Key Stage 1, supporting the transition from ELGs to the National Curriculum. Since the introduction of the 2014 National Curriculum I have been involved in implementing the mastery maths curriculum and the principles of mastery with a key focus on making problem solving and reasoning integral to the daily teaching and learning in maths across my school.
I am also currently participating in the second and final year of the Teaching for Mastery Teacher Research Groups (TRGs) led by the NCTEM East Midlands Maths Hubs. In this project I have worked alongside a Primary Mastery Specialist to further develop and refine teaching and understanding of mastery, as well as teaching and learning across my school.
